Embroidery

The old is being made new in Valley's Art 2 and Studio classes as they learn the art of embroidery.  This almost forgotten art form has been gaining popularity lately thanks to the enthusiasm of many social media influencers, as well as the push towards handmade original arts and crafts by such sites as emerging giant Etsy.  Embroidery was one of the interests students had discussed trying two years ago, but between the pandemic and shipping catastrophes they were unable to do so.  This year supplies were bought from the generous window painting donation from G.L.O. (Growing Lucasville Opportunities).  Students in both classes were challenged to design and stitch an original piece of embroidery.  They were shown some basic stitches to include in their piece, and given free-reign to begin.  Although nervous, many students were relieved when they realized how relaxing embroidery can be.  The positive feedback they've received from family, teachers, and community members on their pieces in progress has been wonderful as well.  "My grandma was so excited when she saw what I was doing!" said senior Haley Whitt.  Teacher Kelly Montgomery is always looking for new ways to connect the Visual Arts with students everyday lives.  "Embroidery is one of those art forms that has unfortunately fallen by the wayside in recent years.  I was definitely anxious about how students would receive this project.  They have surprised me with their excitement!  I'm glad they're enjoying it and reviving something that was on the verge of artistic extincion."
